Essential Oils Can Help Arthritis in Dogs

April 18, 2016

Do you worry about the side effects of your dog’s arthritis medications. Many dog owners do and rightfully so. Nonsteriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, or NSAIDs, can cause problems for dogs.

1) Stomach ulcers or frequent indigestion are common side effects.
2) NSAID cannot be used with steroid drugs for allergy treatment due to severe stomach irritation and ulcer formation.
3) NSAIDs also inhibit clot formation and increase the chance of post-surgical bleeding.
4) Worse case they can cause liver of kidney failure

But there are natural alternatives that don’t have these same risks. Certain essential oils have the same pain relieving properties as NSAIDs without the harsh side effects.

Cassia oil and Cinnamon bark oil have the exact same anti-inflammatory effect as the popular drug, Rimadyl, without the same potential side effects.

Wintergreen oil is considered natures “aspirin” because it inhibits the other inflammatory pathway that causes pain. Its safety is well known as it is a common FDA approved flavor additive in many foods and candies. It is also used in many pain creams.

Applied to painful areas, the combined effects of these oils have potent pain relieving qualities. One of my clients that used our Well Dog proprietary blend said that it was very helpful making her brother’s terminally ill dog much more comfortable in its final days. Applied to the belly skin, it relieved the pain of his abdominal cancer.

Cassia, Cinnamon and Wintergreen can be very irritating to the skin if used undiluted. Dosing instructions should be under veterinary supervision. If your veterinarian does not offer essential oil treatments for arthritic pain relief for your dog consult your local holistic veterinarian for help with effective treatment.
