Basic Dog Care 03 | The Two Disappearing Days for Dogs

Each July 5th animal shelters are overflowing with dogs that ran away from home! Unfortunately, fireworks are fun for us but terrifying to your dog. Shelters and humane societies across the US report that the days after the 4th of July celebrations are the worst days for increasing the number of dogs picked up as strays. Many of these dogs will not be reunited with their families because they don’t have identifying microchips. Don’t let your dog be one of those poor dogs. Shelters report that most dogs that are microchipped are returned to their owners.

Helpful Suggestions for Preventing Your Dog from Becoming Stray

  • Make sure yard gates are secured and fences are high enough to prevent escape
  • Bring your dog indoors, if possible, during evening firework events
  • If possible, be home with your dog during these celebrations
  • Ask your vet about natural calming remedies to decrease your dog’s noise sensitivity
  • Make sure your dog is microchipped
  • Make sure that your yearly premium has been paid for your dog’s microchip

(Most dog owners are unaware that the microchip in their dogs has a required yearly fee to remain registered. If this premium is not current, your dog’s contact information will not be available to return your dog - Sad, but true)
